Chin sags after Weight Loss By Health & Fitness editor Amy Bertrand
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 08/13/2007
Q: I have been working at weight loss since January with some success. I have added an exercise routine (treadmill, abs, arms). With this in mind, I have noticed my chin (skin and muscle) is starting to look flabby. Are there any facial exercises that are available for tightening the skin and muscle on the facial and neck area?
I am 51 years old and know some of this is a result of the aging process. However, if I can facilitate a facial exercise routine that will assist in the muscle structure, it would be appreciated. — A.M.W., St. Louis
A: When you lose weight, you can expect a lot of skin to just hang there and look saggy. If you are younger, the elastin in the skin helps it bounce back into shape (think of younger women whose belly skin looks great after pregnancy). If you are older, or have lost a lot of weight, that skin may not bounce back so easily. In fact, many people who have lost 100 pounds or more often opt for surgery to remove the excess skin.
"Sometimes you just can't do much to help Mother Nature," says LeAnn Harris, an exercise physiologist and manager of the BJC WellAware Center.
Harris says your best bet is to massage your face and neck a couple of times a day to stimulate the muscles and the blood flow to the area.
She also suggests an exercise in which you sit in a chair, tilt your head all the way back, looking at the ceiling, and pretend to chew, keeping your mouth closed.
"That's not going to make it go away, but it could help a bit," she says.
And try smiling, she says, because "smiling tightens the muscles, giving them a workout."
